The Reveal....writer-artist Richard Comely, creator of Canadian heroic icon Captain Canuck

On Saturday May 7th, Free Comic Book Day, legendary  writer-artist Richard Comely, creator of Canadian heroic icon Captain Canuck will be at Mississauga comic book store Image Collections in Streetsville.

Captain Canuck #1exploded on the scene back in 1975 as a self published comic series featuring a patriotically true Canadian hero!  To date, more than 2.3 million copiesover 26 different editions have been printed since the first issue.

Through not only comics, but also television, syndicated newspaper strips, t-shirts, buttons, textbooks, and even a government issued postage stamp, Captain Canuck has achieved widespread acclaim, success, and historical importance in contemporary Canadian culture.

Combining action-packed adventures with elements of science fiction, he has been thrilling readers with the exploits of a costumed Canadian secret agent for over 35 years, indeed thus inspiring many other creators to enter the flourishing industry, fascinated by the fruitful story of a risen national hero, one Richard Comely.

What better showcase could there be than Free Comic Book Day for the display of what can be achieved through imagination and penmanship, of sketching out an idea and expanding it so the invention reaches past its inventor, stretches outside its confines, skewing the panels and allowing readers to draw their own conclusions...

As once simply doodles, notes, and scribbles stymied by a stalled dream, your talents, like Richard's, can easily be unleashed, encouraged to fly, and be destined to rocket beyond the scope of any intentions.  A pencil, a few sheets of paper, a little enthusiasm, consistency, and perseverance can make many goals [and stories] transform quickly into reality.   Truly, in addition to the obvious, that is the vested purpose of this actually quite deeply mined medium's educational holiday shared the 1st Saturday in May each year, intentionally and proudly doing our best to "FREE" COMICS....

...On SATURDAY MAY 7th 2011, FREE COMIC BOOK DAY @ Image Collections, Mississauga's COMIC STORE!

If you've never heard of it, you are not alone as too many weren't able to locate it on their television screens [some say due to FOX policies] , resulting in its cancelation far too soon, after only a couple of handfuls of episodes...

Don't let it being described unappeallingly as a "space western" deter you, as remarkably, its fully 'fleshed-out' NINE[!!] main characters provided viewers tremendous payback in exchange for watching.  So much so, that the decison was made to release it to DVD, where word of mouth made it an unforseen [...pun intended :o] bestseller, leading to even MORE outcry [or maybe just 'cry'-ing] of its extinction...

Out of 'Firefly's ashes, rose....

as, knowing an audience was clambering for one, a sequel movie was green-lit.  Both the TV Show and the movie came from the same mind who created 'BUFFY' [see below], 'ANGEL', 'SPIKE', and after, 'DOLL HOUSE', ....JOSS WHEDON!

JOSS was also just  recently recruited by MARVEL COMICS to write the first 24 issues [now available in collected form in both hardcover & soft] of an out of direct continuity [easier to follow] 'ASTONISHING X-MEN' comic perfect for new or old readers....

It remains one of the BEST STORYLINES Marvel has produced in the 21 century, alongside 'The Ultimates' [ sophisticated modern take on 'The Avengers'], 'Civil War' [realisticly completely changed the dynamics of Marvel], and many of its 'STEPHEN KING' [The Stand, Dark Tower...], 'ORSON SCOTT CARD' [Ender's Game...], JANE AUSTEN [yes, Jane Austen(!!), famous chick-book author, but WE like her 2!], and WIZARD OF OZ [plus sequel-books] lines of 'graphic novels'....

[opening narration for FIREFLY TV Show....]
-----Book: "After the Earth was used up, we found a new solar system and hundreds of new Earths were terraformed and colonized. The central planets formed the Alliance and decided all the planets had to join under their rule. There was some disagreement on that point. After the War, many of the Independents who had fought and lost drifted to the edges of the system, far from Alliance control. Out here, people struggled to get by with the most basic technologies; a ship would bring you work, a gun would help you keep it. A captain's goal was simple: find a crew, find a job, keep flying."

-----Mal: "Jayne, your mouth is talking....You might wanna look into that."----from FIREFLY

-----Wash: "Man walks down the street in a hat like that, you know he's not afraid of anything ... "----from FIREFLY

----Zoe: "River, honey, he's putting the hair away now."

------River: "It doesn't matter. It's waiting..."----------from FIREFLY

[2nd opening narration.....FIREFLY TV Show..... ]
-----Mal: "Here's how it is: The Earth got used up, so we moved out and terraformed a whole new galaxy of Earths. Some rich and flush with the new technologies, some not so much. The Central Planets, thems formed the Alliance, waged war to bring everyone under their rule; a few idiots tried to fight it, among them myself. I'm Malcolm Reynolds, captain of Serenity. She's a transport ship; Firefly class. Got a good crew: fighters, pilot, mechanic. We even picked up a preacher for some reason, and a bona fide companion. There's a doctor, too, took his genius sister outta some Alliance camp, so they're keepin' a low profile. You understand. You got a job, we can do it, don't much care what it is."
